As I predicted, some very tough first round matches, although not the ones I imagined!
Venus Williams had a fiesty opponent in Halep, closely winning in the third set tiebreak. Score was: 6-1, 4-6, 7-6(6). Stosur also had to bring her best tennis to the blue clay to battle past Martic: 7-5, 4-6, 7-6(5). Wozniacki needed three sets against Pervak of Kazakhstan: 7-6(7), 3-6, 6-4 and I'm so grateful I didn't saw this live on tv:
This gotta be the tournament with the most tiebreaks in the first round: 12!
Some seeded players did fall in the first round:
- Cibulkova lost to Vinci: 3-6, 2-6;
- Schiavone fell to Lepchenko: 4-6, 7-6(8), 3-6;
- Bartoli was defeated by Cirstea: 7-6(6), 4-6, 3-6;
- Zvonareva couldn't find her winning spirit against Cetkovska: 2-6, 2-6
- Jankovic lost in three tight sets to Suarrez Navarro: 6-4, (5)6-7, 4-6.
I'm disappointed by Zvonareva and Schiavone (especially considering clay is her best surface!), but this says it all, right?
Azarenka did have a fierce opponent in Kuznetsova, but eventually she won: 7-6(5), 6-4. Wickmayer also did a great job defeating Gajdosova 6-2, 6-4.
Let's hope the second round is gonna be as entertaining as this one! Stay posted!
