Let's take a look at this year's quarterfinalists in Rome!
I expected Azarenka in the quarter finals but she had to forfeit due to a shoulder injury in the third round and so Cibulkova got a walk-over to confront Na Li next. The Chinese didn't have much opposition after Lisicki lost against Erakovic: 6(4)-7, 6-4, 3-6 and Wickmayer went down fighting against Benesova in the same round: 4-6, 7-5, (5)6-7.
Radwanska surprisingly lost against Cetkovska in the second round (score: 4-6, 6-4, 1-6), at least it's not another defeat to Azarenka. Although with the forfait of the number one, this was actually a chance for the Pole to reach the final! But Cetkovska played really well until her third round match against Pennetta (who is on fire before her home crowd!) when she lost 0-6, 1-6. Serena is the other quartefinal in this part of the draw, after Wozniacki had to forfeit due to breathing problems (doesn't sound good at all!) in the second round.
Kvitova will face Kerber in the next quarter final (should be a very interesting match!) after the German defeated Goerges 6-4, 6-1 after she had won against Bartoli in the second round 6-3, 6-1. A lot of Germans in the same draw if you ask me.
There were a lot of exciting matches to grab the last two quarter final spots. Ivanovic beat Kuznetsova in the first round 6-4, 6-3 (the Russian keeps getting tough opponents in the first round!) before falling to Sharapova in the third round (4)6-7, 3-6. It was a match with a lot of opportunities for Ivanovic (6 setpoints and multiple breakpoints) but Sharapova proved more focused on the big points.
Schiavone was upset in her first round by Makarova: 3-6, 4-6. I hoped the Italian would step up at home soil and show her brilliant gravel skills. I fear she'll be out fast in Roland Garros! Makarova was then defeated by Venus Williams: (7)6-7, 1-6. The American went on to upset Stosur 6-4, 6-3.
To sum it up: Cibulkova - Na Li, Pennetta - Serena Williams, Kerber - Kvitova, Venus Williams - Sharapova. Keep posted!
