Roland Garros - Quarterfinal

Hi everyone,

With such unusual quarterfinalists, I didn't expect less than interesting matches!

Stosur faced the fierce Cibulkova. From the beginning it was immediately clear she had a strong battle plan against the Australian: play mighty a lot of drop shots, take the serve very late and drive it deep in the field and above all be agressive! But the Slovakian lacked in execution and after Stosur upped her game in the second set, it was the Aussie that claimed the victory: 6-4, 6-1. Three things we love about Cibulkova: she gives hope to all 5 feet 3 (1m60) people that tennis isn't about height, she outplayed the number one in this tournament and apparantely she loves sniffing new tennis balls (crazy is amazing, right?!).

And Errani just goes on with her amazing Italian fire! It didn't look good for her in the second set (she won the first: 6-3), she was a break behind in the next set. Kerber even served for the match at 6-5 and had setpoints, but Errani crawled her way to a tiebreak. The German looked incredibly exhausted at this point and the tiebreak seemed the straw that broke the camel's back! Errani won: 6-3, 7-6(2)

For a moment, all the signs pointed to another upset in the making! Shvedova took the first set: 6-3 against number four Kvitova. Fortunately she got a more convincing start in the second set with her all-known attack strategy: 2-6.

Kvitova took another 2-0 lead in the third set, but this time Shvedova came rushing by to lead 4-2 herself. The number four then struggled herself back to 5-4 and managed to convert the second matchpoint on the Shvedova serve to win: 3-6, 6-2, 6-4.

Kvitova will face Sharapova in the semi's. Kanepi couldn't hold off the Russian to advance a step closer to her Career Slam (Roland Garros is the only one she's missing). Not even some loud Estonian fans could up Kanepi's game.

The match consisted of many unforced errors on both sides that led to a lot of breaks. But it was Sharapova who outlasted the obviously tired Kanepi: 6-2, 6-3.

All the highlights of these matches can be seen: here.
Be sure to read some funny interviews of Stosur, Kuznetsova, Kvitova, Cibulkova and Shvedova.

Oh yes, apparantely Kvitova won the women's singles award at the Champion's dinner (hosted yesterday, June 5th). So congrats!
