The day of the semifinals began on such a happy note in honor of women's day like this:
Yes, that's a pink court for the legend's doubles! I just want to shout: MY EYES! MY EYES! But it's a very nice gesture for women's day! The tennis players who hated the blue clay at Madrid, be aware: there are worse colors out there!
But in the afternoon, the French Open got practically washed away:
So, it wasn't until three o'clock the first semifinal could get started: Errani vs. Stosur! First, it looked good for the Australian leading 2-0 in the first set. She really went after the weak second serve of the Italian but Errani broke back quickly. They matched up quite nicely against each other: fierce fought rallies, switching momentums and tough mental strength. Errani grabbed her chance at 5-5 to break and take the first set: 7-5.
In the second set, Stosur dominated all the way. It was 5-0 in no time and at 5-1 an ace did the trick: 6-1 for Stosur. It seemed she would continue on this good roll, but surprisingly Errani took the 3-0 lead in the third set. Stosur did come back to level at 3-3 but the Italian decided that was quite enough and finished it: 7-5, 1-6, 6-3.
The second semifinal was between Sharapova and Kvitova. The number two started with some commanding tennis and broke the Kvitova serve at 2-2. The Czech couldn't keep up with the Sharapova serve (although it was quite windy): 6-3 for the Russian.
In the second set another disputed call meant a definite lead of 3-2 for Sharapova (before both players kept breaking each other's serve). Seriously guys, this 'we-can-see-the-mark' excuse for not getting hawk eye is getting outdated! This time I haven't got a clue if that ball was in or not, but they were definitely looking at the wrong mark.
It proved an important hold for Sharapova and although Kvitova still upset with the call gone bad for her, she couldn't channel her anger long enough to make it difficult for the Russian. Sharapova is in her Roland Garros final: 6-3, 6-3!
This does not only mean she's battling for her first French Open title, but she took over the number one spot from Azarenka. And we certainly give her credit for it: she's been fighting hard since her shoulder operation and reached a lot of finals in this year already. Congrats!
Now we'll see if she will be able to win the tournament in the end, Errani isn't someone to be underestimated, clearly! Stay posted!
