Roland Garros - Round three

Hi everyone,

It's turning into a crazy French Open with more seeded players out in the third round!

First up, the number three seed Radwanska. She lost, quite easily to Kuznetsova, only seeded 26th! In no time it was 5-0 for the Russian in the first set. Radwanska just wasn't playing as the number three, more like she was when Kuznetsova was still winning Grand Slams! The Pole tried everything, but Kuznetsova hammered here around the court to take the first set: 6-1. And the Russian didn't stop there, she broke right away and took a 3-0 lead. From that moment on, Radwanska used her anger quite effectively to take a break back and clamp on at 3-2. Kuznetsova countered beautifully and closed it out: 6-2 in the second set.

Yes Kuznetsova kills the pain, in this case the number three (her tattoo says: Pain doesn't kill me, I kill the pain). I got fond of Radwanska, especially with her good run but third round is it for her. She definitely looked good coming into the French Open, but maybe a too tough of a draw for her?

Another two upsets for Wozniacki and Schiavone. Those matches both featured an incredible comeback!
Wozniacki quickly faced a set (1-6) and 2-5 down against Kanepi. There were some intense long rallies but the Estonian proved the more agressive. In the mean time there was a disputed call at breakpoint for Kanepi. Wozniacki clearly saw the ball out but the umpire wouldn't change his mind. This of course led to some discussion, all the while Kanepi was sitting already. If it wasn't at such a crucial time, it would have been at least a bit funny!

But Wozniacki couldn't be more annoyed. She even yelled at the umpire: 'Did you go to school? Because that was clearly out and you would have learned that there!' and 'If I had hawkeye, you would be so embarrassed right now!' But we all know...the umpire is the boss.

So it went on to 2-1... 3-1... 4-1. The Dane was letting the match slip it seemed, still upset over that bad call (she did stop the point because she was convinced it was out and frankly I saw it out too but who am I of course?). At 5-2 Kanepi was serving for the match and quickly had two match points, how could that go wrong right? Well, pretty bad actually! When Wozniacki took the break unexpectedly, she immediately stormed back to 5-5.

Kanepi was just a shadow of herself while the Dane won with love games! And the French crowd loves to see a resurrection of course. Finally, when Wozniacki had points for a 6-5 lead, Kanepi switched up a gear and took the break. Serving again for the match, the Estonian struck on an impressive defensive Wozniacki and it was (3)6-7 all of a sudden.
A major comeback in the second set wasn't enough to keep Kanepi from a 5-1 lead in the third set. Her powerful strokes were back and forced a third matchpoint. And it worked like a moth to a flame, because Wozniacki came back to 5-3, breaking Kanepi twice. It seemed the Estonian couldn't serve out the match, so she finally ended it on the Wozniacki serve.
Kanepi - Wozniacki score: 6-1, (3)6-7, 6-3.

It was the other way around in the match between Schiavone and Lepchenko. The American came back from a 0-3 deficit in the third set to win: 3-6, 6-3, 8-6. Epic win!

Georges crashed out against Dutch Rus: (5)6-7, 6-2, 2-6. Also Ivanovic reached a dead-end in the third round. She lost to Italian Sara Errani in three sets: 6-1, 5-7, 3-6. The Serbian game was just too inconsistent with breaks flying around in this match.

Don't worry, some top playerd did make it through! Azarenka defeated Wozniak: 6-4, 6-4. Kerber had a little struggle with the Italian Pennetta: 4-6, 6-3, 6-2. Kvitova also needed three sets against Bratchikova: 6-2, 4-6, 6-1. Stephens and Cibulkova got through convincingly. I'm definitely interested to see Cibulkova taking on a serious contender for this French title, and she'll not have to wait long: Azarenka is waiting for her next!

Sharapova also has convincing written all over her face! She was impressive against the Japanese Morita: 6-1, 6-1. In the third round (her second round was postponed due to another Isner-marathon match) she defeated Peng: 6-1, 6-2. That makes just 5 lost games in three rounds, amazing! I'm smelling a serious contender for the title (hopefully not against Azarenka again or we'll be hearing it too!).

And here is 'frustration' translated in three pics:

Stosur played very well against her Grand Slam nemisis Petrova, closing it out in two sets for a time: 6-3, 6-3. I don't wanna jinx it, but the Australian does look good for another semifinal spot at least!

Na Li also made it through after being a set down against McHale: 3-6, 6-2, 6-1. It's good she's still in the French Open because for god's sake, they even made a Chinese site of Roland Garros (I just noticed that today)!
