Roland Garros - Round four

Hi everyone,

We're up to 16 contenders for this year's Coupe Suzanne Lenglen in the fourth round!

And the trend of unexpected winners continues!
First up the match between Errani and Kuznetsova. True, the Italian is higher ranked than Kuznetsova but after her great performance against Radwanska, I was convinced she would go a mile further. Errani had different plans, made clear immediately with a dry 6-0 in the first set.

(Doesn't this picture remind you of the: 'Hey, what's up, Doc?' of Bugs Bunny?!)

The Russian tried everything in the second set and the chances flew by but Errani battled through them. The Italian is also still in the doubles, she's having such a fantastic tournament! But it's bye-bye for Kuznetsova...

Up next for Errani is Kerber, who actually beat Martic: 6-3, 7-5 (where Bartoli and Medina Garrigues weren't able to). It was a tough match and Martic can't complain about her Roland Garros either but it's the German who is through to her second Grand Slam quarterfinals (after reaching the semi's in US Open last year).

( - One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind - )

Another seeded player that knocked her way into the quarterfinals is Stosur. She defeated Stephens: 7-5, 6-4. The family of the American were supporting with quite some shouting capacity, but nevertheless it was Stosur's game that dominated (good and bad way when her faults increased). In the second set, Stosur actually served for the set at 5-1 but managed to lose two breaks before closing it out on Stephens own service game.

Now, the biggest upset was the defeat of the number one! I was hoping for some tennismagic between Azarenka and Cibulkova and the Slovakian didn't let me down! She may be just 5 foot 3 (1m60) but she looked like a giant ass-kicking warrior on that court! I was kinda fearing for a Miami-revival of Azarenka in the second set (she defeated Cibulkova there after the Slovakian was up a set and a break). The number one did come back but Cibulkova finished it this time in the tiebreak: 6-2, 7-6(4). And happy she was, indeed!

The Chinese can kiss their dream goodbye too, because Na Li got defeated by Shvedova (ranked 142!): 6-3, 2-6, 0-6.

The number two and four did get through in this round! Sharapova needed to overcome a tough and determined Zakopalova, bad line calling, slippery courts and her own sucky serve to do it, but she pulled it off in three sets: 6-4, (5)6-7, 6-2.

(I feel sorry for that ball, under going the Russian wrath!)

Kvitova had it relatively easy against Lepchenko, beating her: 6-2, 6-1. So maybe Kvitova looks better in the second week than Sharapova?
The last match was between Kanepi and Rus with the Estonian advancing to the quarterfinal (which upset the orange crowd): 6-1, 4-6, 6-0.

So that creates this quarterfinal mash-ups: Cibulkova vs. Stosur, Errani up against Kerber, Shvedova faces Kvitova and Kanepi - Sharapova. Stay tuned!
